An exhaust system may include one or more exhaust pipes. The system makes sure that exhaust gas is diverted from any controlled combustion happening inside an engine. Exhaust gases can flow through an exhaust manifold and a cylinder head, turbocharger, catalytic converter, or muffler, depending on the system used. While a catalytic converter is used to limit air pollution and a muffler to reduce noise, a turbocharger can improve the power of the engine. Another important component of the system is the cat back, which extends from the catalyctic converter outlet to the vent to open air. Usually, it covers the converter pipe to the muffler, as well as the muffler up to the final end of the pipe to open air.
Cat back exhaust systems are known for using a pipe with a diameter that is bigger than the ones used in a stock system. Most cat back exhaust systems make use of mandrel-bent turns, so the exhaust gas will have less back pressure when exiting from the pipe or other components. To further limit the back pressure, glasspack mufflers are often used. Some cat back exhaust systems may improve the exhaust note, with a louder or deeper sound.
